(CNN Business) -

If you've ever had a song stuck in your head but can't remember the lyrics well enough to search for it, Google has a solution: hum to search for it.

Google introduced a new search feature on Thursday that allows users to search for songs by humming a few bars in an attempt to help them identify the music.

The feature is now part of the Google mobile app and the Google Assistant, where you can say "what's this song?"

(add a "Hello Google" first in the Google Assistant) and then hum, whistle or sing for 10-15 seconds.

The results will include multiple probable songs, along with the search engine's estimate of how likely each is the one you're looking for.

Google said the feature, which was announced along with several other new search-related features during an online event held by the company, will be available first in English on Apple's iOS and in more than 20 languages on Apple's Android mobile platform. Google.

Users don't need to have a perfect pitch for the feature to work, according to Google.

Search for a song, new on Google

Searching by humming is not a new idea;

SoundHound, for example, offers a hum recognition feature, although it's new to Google.

Like many of Google's search offerings, the feature uses machine learning: essentially, the software parses the melody you hum (or sing or whistle), turning it into a sequence of digits that can then be compared to tons of songs. digitized to find some that are similar.

The company has been working on the use of artificial intelligence for music recognition for several years.

The feature may be in high demand: Aparna Chennapragada, a Google vice president who introduced it during the Google-streamed event on Thursday, said people ask Google "what song is playing" nearly 100 million times a month.
