The corona plague, which broke out in our lives as a health crisis, also took the "religious" demon out of the closet - which turned the spotlight on long-standing conflicts over religion in the public sphere.

One of them is the Israeli public's relationship with certain groups in the ultra-Orthodox community, who demonstrably ignore the laws of the State of Israel, which they claim conflict with their religious beliefs.

Last week, the religious demon reappeared, during a discussion held in the Corona Cabinet on the subject of weddings during the Corona period.

According to reports, in response to MK Itzik Shmuli claiming that weddings are a source of mass infection, Minister Aryeh Deri replied: "You do not understand the Jewish tradition and the importance of the wedding event in the Jewish tradition." In response, Shmuli replied: I will not underestimate yours. "

According to Deri, preserving the Jewish tradition means allowing large weddings. However, over the years, the Jewish tradition has set completely different priorities. In these words, Deri is, in effect, seeking to change the Jewish scale of values.

The corona also took out the "religious" demon from the closet.

Instead of placing the value of the sanctity of life in the first place, while banning the holding of mass weddings on behalf of "and you were saved for your souls", Deri seeks to determine that the wedding party, which comes after the canopy and kiddushim, is itself a supreme value.

What caught my attention is the fact that in this statement, Minister Deri is creating a new tradition.

Until the last hundred years, it was not customary among many communities to hold large weddings, and this was certainly not the Jewish tradition.

Since the days of the Talmud, the Jewish tradition has miraculously elevated the value of modesty over arrogance, which is sometimes expressed in the holding of large weddings.

In fact, many rabbis over the years have come out against the giant weddings, which have become a habit in the ultra-Orthodox sector as well as in the Zionist-religious sector.

The greatest arbitrators of our time, including Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, were married in exceptionally modest wedding ceremonies.

A common custom in many communities around the world was to hold the wedding ceremony on a Friday afternoon, before Shabbat, in order to save expenses and unite the marriage meal along with the Shabbat meal.

These words of Minister Deri actually condemn the consumer culture that has permeated the ultra-Orthodox public, and he calls for sanctifying it over the sanctity of life.

Distort the halakhah.

In a sense, the Jewish tradition is being mobilized these days to guide policymakers in the State of Israel in their attitude toward Corona.

It's impressive.

I would have been happy if the decision-makers had relied on the Jewish tradition in the complex moral debate, on how much we should fear and shut ourselves off in order to preserve the soul, versus how much we should continue to conduct our lives even in the shadow of risk.

However, when a political leader distorts the law, and uses the Jewish tradition as a tool to please his electorate - I am less impressed.
