Protesters gathered today (Sunday) across France to express support for freedom of expression and to commemorate the teacher who was beheaded near Paris following a discussion on illustrations of the Prophet Muhammad in his class.

Samuel Patti, a 47-year-old middle school history teacher, was murdered Friday near the institution where he taught in the Paris suburbs.

The terrorist, an 18-year-old Chechen boy, was shot dead by police not far away.

Politicians, organizations and trade unions demonstrated in the Place de la République in Paris, holding signs that read "I am Samuel", among others, similar to the slogan "I am Shirley" that came up after the 2015 massacre in the office of satirical magazine Charlie Bedouin.

A national ceremony will be held in his memory on Wednesday.

Other protesters gathered in other major cities, including Lyon, Toulouse, Strasbourg, Nantes, Marseille, Lille and Bordeaux.

At the same time, French authorities arrested another suspect, 11 in number, on suspicion of involvement in a murder that shocked the country and was perceived as an attack on the secular nature of the republic and freedom of expression.

The counter-terrorism prosecutor, Jean-François Ricard, said at least four of the detainees were relatives of the terrorist, who last March had received a ten-year residence permit in France as a refugee.

He was armed with a knife and an air pistol.

He said his half-sister joined ISIS in Syria in 2014.

He did not say her name, and it is unclear where she is now.

Other detainees include a parent from the school and an extremist Muslim preacher, who reportedly in France called for revenge on the teacher.

Rikar said a terrorist message was found on the terrorist's phone and a picture of the teacher on a Twitter account named Abdullah A.

He posted the picture of the decapitated head minutes after the attack, writing: "I executed one of the dogs of hell who dared to belittle Muhammad."

He told reporters that the terrorist lived in the town of Abero, in Normandy, about a hundred kilometers from the murder scene.

Laurent Nunez, head of the anti-terrorism unit in France, said in an interview with Reddy that he "crossed a red line" in an attack on ".

Leaders in the Muslim community condemned the attack.

The issue of Muhammad's illustrations has sparked widespread public debate in the country, and has even been linked to several terrorist acts, the most recent of which was three weeks ago, when two journalists were stabbed near the former offices of Charlie Hebdo magazine in Paris.

The terrorist, who emigrated from Pakistan, was arrested by police and said he thought the magazine was still operating there.

He wanted "revenge" for the re-publication of illustrations mocking the Prophet Muhammad days earlier, with the opening of the trial of 14 aides in the January 2015 attacks. One of the targets was Shirley Bedouin's office, where 12 people were killed.

The Place d'Armes in Paris witnessed a huge demonstration of about one and a half million people after the deadly attacks in January 2015. One of the demonstrators today carried a sign that read "Zero tolerance towards all enemies of the Republic", and another "I am a teacher. I think of you, Samuel".

The demonstration was attended by French Prime Minister Jean Castex and Mayor of Paris Ann Hidalgo, and they observed a minute of silence followed by the playing of the French national anthem.

All the protesters wore masks due to the corona plague.

"You are not scaring us, we are France," the prime minister tweeted.

The teacher was a target for threats

The terrorist arrived at the school on Friday afternoon and asked the students to point to the teacher.

He had no overt contact with the institution or teacher, and he followed him while he returned home from work.

He stabbed him to death and then beheaded him.

Eyewitnesses said they heard the assailant shout "Allahu Akbar" during the murder.

When police approached him, he fired an air pistol at them.

They returned fire and hit him nine times.

A 30-centimeter-long knife was found near the murder scene.

Authorities said the boy had a criminal background, but only for petty offenses.

The anti-terrorism prosecutor said the teacher had been the target of threats since he showed the Prophet Muhammad's illustrations during a lesson on freedom of expression, in the context of the publications in Shirley Habdo.

Patty, a history and geography teacher, advised Muslim students to look away if they thought they might be offended, as he had done in similar classes in the past.

One of the parents of the students reacted angrily, and went to the school to complain.

He and another man who accompanied him - the radical preacher 'Abd al-Hakim Safrivi - made videos calling Patti a "bully" and demanding his suspension.

Both among the detainees.

Moderates in the Muslim community condemned the attack. A group of imams from the Lyon region convened a special meeting today to discuss "the horrific murder of our countryman by a terrorist in the name of an obscure belief committed an unforgivable thing".

Tarek Obero, an imam of a mosque in Bordeaux, said yesterday that the attacks in recent years have been devastating for the Muslim community. "We are between a rock and a hard place," he said in a radio interview. "This is an attack on the republic, society, peace and the essence of religion, which speaks of unity. Civilization does not kill an innocent person, but barbarism."

The attack was condemned around the world. "On behalf of the United States, I would like to express my sincere condolences to my friend, President of France Macron, who yesterday suffered a most brutal Islamist terrorist attack - beheading an innocent teacher near Paris," President Donald Trump said at an election rally in Wisconsin. "France is in a tough time and Macron is a great guy."

Macron, who visited the arena on Friday, said it was an "Islamist terrorist attack" and that the teacher was killed because he "taught about freedom of expression". Just this month, the president unveiled a plan to fight radical Islam, which has angered some circles in the Muslim community in France.
