Iran announced tonight (Sunday) that the arms embargo on it has ended, despite US opposition and its refusal to recognize it.

However, Tehran said they have no intention of embarking on a procurement campaign due to their reliance on local industry produce.

"Iran's defensive doctrine is largely based on its people and local capabilities. Unconventional weapons, weapons of mass destruction and the acquisition of conventional weapons are not part of Iran's defensive doctrine," the foreign minister said in a statement.

The UN Security Council's arms embargo imposed on Iran in 2007 is set to expire today, as stipulated in the 2015 nuclear deal. However, the United States, which unilaterally withdrew from it in 2018, began in August the process of returning all sanctions on Tehran after the Council The defense has refused calls for an extension of the conventional arms embargo on Iran,

signed by Russia, China, Britain, Germany and France, which oppose the Trump administration's unilateral moves.

The sanctions imposed by the United States on Iran in recent years have severely damaged its economy and exacerbated tensions between the two countries.

US President Donald Trump wants to reach a new agreement with Iran, which will also include the missile program and its activities in the Middle East, but Iran opposes without lifting the sanctions.

"The normalization of Iran's defensive cooperation with the world is a victory of multilateralism, peace and security in our region," Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif wrote on his Twitter account.

Iran has developed a large local arms industry in light of international sanctions and the embargo that barred it from purchasing weapons and military equipment.

Western military experts say Iran sometimes exaggerates its military capabilities, although fears of its long-term missile program have contributed to the US administration's decision to leave the nuclear deal.
