An earthquake measuring 5.8 degrees on the Richter scale hit western Indonesia today, without any information about injuries or damages.
"The epicenter of the quake was 33 kilometers southwest of Pulai Bagai Selatan in Sumatra, and it was at a depth of 14 kilometers below sea level," Xinhua news agency quoted Witjat Mokuo, an official at the Indonesian Meteorology and Geophysics Agency, as saying.
The official added that an aftershock of 5.7 degrees followed that quake by about 16 minutes, noting that no tsunami warnings were issued.
It is noteworthy that Indonesia is prone to earthquakes, as it is located in an active area called the Ring of Fire, where earthquakes and volcanoes abound.
