A senior White House official has visited Damascus and held secret meetings with the Syrian government to release two U.S. citizens suspected of being held there, a Trump administration official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

He said the senior official, Cash Patel, Vice Presidential adviser to President Donald Trump and the leading figure in the fight against terrorism in the White House, arrived in the Syrian capital earlier this year.

The source, who confirmed the report first published in the Wall Street Journal, said it "symbolizes how President Trump has made it a priority to bring home American-held overseas."

The White House and the State Department have not yet commented on the matter.

According to the newspaper, which quoted Trump administration officials and other negotiators, it was the first time in more than a decade that a senior U.S. administration official had met with representatives of President Bashar Assad's isolated regime.

Syria has been in a brutal civil war since 2011, but Assad has managed to hold on to power with the support of Russia and Iran.

In the United States, it is hoped that Assad will release Austin Pilot, a journalist and former Marine who disappeared while reporting from Syria in 2012, and Majed Kamalmaz, an American-Syrian psychologist who disappeared after being arrested at the regime checkpoint in 2017.

The Wall Street Journal reported that at least four other Americans are in the hands of the Syrian government, according to estimates, but very little is known about their cases.

According to the report, Trump wrote a letter to Assad in March, in which he proposed a "direct dialogue" on a pilot.

In recent months, the administration has imposed extensive sanctions on the Assad regime, including him and his wife.

The report said last week that the head of Lebanon's security services, Abbas Ibrahim, met with National Security Adviser Robert O'Brien to discuss with him the Americans held in Syria.

However, according to sources involved in the matter, the talks did not progress too much, in light of Damascus' demand for the withdrawal of American forces from the country.
