German team Schalke 04 has publicly apologized after some of its fans allegedly attacked 15-year-old Youssoufa Moukoko, who plays for Borussia Dortmund's under-19 category, with racist insults.

The alleged incident occurred on Sunday, in a match between the youth categories of both clubs.

"We can only apologize for the conduct of some of our fans against Youssoufa Moukoko, in today's U19 match," the club said after the German derby in the Ruhr region, using the hashtag "NoToRacism", or "NoAlRacismo " in Spanish.

Exactly what those fans said is unknown.

"Leaving aside the emotions of the derby, we completely condemn and reject such insults," added Schalke 04, stating that their Department of Fans Affairs "will take the necessary measures."

The Control Committee of the German Football Association (DFB) indicated that it will investigate "possible racist insults" against Moukoko.

"The German Football Association does not tolerate any form of racism and opposes any of its forms," said Thomas Bergmann, a member of the German Football Control Committee.

"The Control Committee will investigate whether there were racist insults."

Moukoko is considered one of the favorite talents of European football, scoring all three goals for Borussia Dortmund's U19 team on Sunday to defeat Schalke 04 3-2 in the so-called "Rieverderby".

It was the third hat-trick of the season for the youth, who have been playing against higher-level rivals for several years.

Moukoko is expected to get his shot at Dortmund's first team when he turns 16 next month.

Born in Cameroon, Moukoko has represented Germany in the U16 and U20 categories, and rose through the St. Pauli youth ranks before joining Borussia Dortmund in 2016.

CNN asked Schalke 04 and Borussia Dortmund for comment, but neither side was immediately available to discuss Sunday's incident.
