The Danish entrepreneur who murdered Swedish journalist Kim Wall in his submarine managed to escape today (Tuesday) for a short time from the prison where he is being held on the outskirts of the capital Copenhagen, before being captured by the police.

Police confirmed that Peter Madsen was "arrested and taken from the scene" after being surrounded by police.

According to local reports, he threatened to detonate an explosive device.

The BT newspaper reported that Madsen took a hostage and threatened a jailer with a type of gun to escape the facility.

Eyewitnesses said he managed to escape in a white van before police arrested him.

Madsen was documented sitting on the grass near a wall next to a road, a few hundred yards from the jail.

Two policemen who were deployed on the ground aimed their weapons at him.

The 49-year-old entrepreneur, who built the submarine himself, was convicted in April 2018 of murdering the 30-year-old Wall, while interviewing him in August 2017 while on board the vessel.

He was sent to life in prison after murdering, sexually assaulting and dismembering her body while the submarine was off the coast of Copenhagen.

In a documentary released last month, he first confessed to the murder, after insisting during his well-publicized trial that her death was an accident.

"There's only one person to blame, and that's me," he said.

Madsen did admit in his trial that after Wall was killed, he dismembered her body and threw her body parts into the sea.
