There is a beach in Tarifa

2020-10-20T17:25:08.262Z

Wide sandy beaches and hidden coves, wind and waves for surfing and the pleasure of the beach bars. How to stretch out the summer in the town of Cadiz

On the left you can see the Rock of Gibraltar, on the right Ceuta and, in the background, the north coast of Africa.

The descent by road from the town of Algeciras to Tarifa, framed in the Estrecho Natural Park, is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Spain.

Separated by a little more than 14 kilometers of water, you can see the neighboring continent, so clear that on clear days it seems that you can touch Morocco with the tips of your fingers.

The Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean meet at this point, forming the Strait of Gibraltar.

According to Greek mythology, its origin is attributed to Hercules, who with his great strength separated the earth in two and placed the columns present today on the shield of Andalusia.

This small town in the province of Cádiz, with about 18,200 inhabitants, is the southernmost on the Iberian Peninsula.

But there are thousands of tourists who come to Tarifa —this year, more Spanish than foreigners— to enjoy its wild and kilometers of sand and its famous wind.

The combination of both elements is the ideal setting for the practice of kitesurfing and windsurfing, so much so that the coast of Tarragona has been placed among the best in the world for the exercise of both disciplines.

Los Lances, Valdevaqueros, Bolonia or the naturist cove of El Cañuelo are some of the beaches that can be visited in this part of the Cadiz coast.

Strolling through its golden sand, taking a dip or having a drink in one of its beach bars are some of the plans that, still in autumn, are enjoyed in the Andalusian town.

The

Café del Mar

(+34 956 68 11 22), on Los Lances beach, is one of the essentials.

Its terrace, with a modern and relaxed air, is the perfect place to enjoy one of the best sunsets in the area.

On this same beach,

Carbones 13

(+34 956 79 99 39) is another of the

trendy

beach clubs

.

An expert in Mediterranean food and rice dishes, since its opening four years ago it has become the favorite of actors and other

Spanish

celebrities

who come to Tarifa.

Following the coastline, just under 10 minutes by car is the Valdevaqueros beach.

This windy sandy area hosts, year after year, several events of the kitesurfing world championship.

When the east wind blows, it is a sight to see the sky covered with multicolored kites and the impossible turns of the

riders

in the air.

If you want to enjoy these water sports, both beginners and beginners can come to the Spin Out school.

Founded in 1988, it is one of the pioneers in the area and one of the places where you can rent equipment or hire a course with one of its expert instructors.

On the road towards Zahara de los Atunes we find the Bolonia cove, recently chosen by the readers of

El Viajero

as the most beautiful kilometer-long beach away from urban centers in Spain.

At almost four kilometers long, it is one of the wildest there is here.

Among its greatest attractions is its famous dune, declared a natural monument.

Also the Roman ruins of Baelo Claudia, in very good condition, are worthwhile (closed Mondays; free guided tours on Wednesdays at 12.00, by prior reservation; baeloclaudia.ccul@juntadeandalucia.es).

And if you are looking for a pleasant terrace where you can recharge your batteries,

El Albero

(+34 956 68 85 17) is the perfect option.

Artichokes, cuttlefish croquettes, squid or sea bass are some of its star dishes.

For those who want to escape the wind and look for a more secluded beach, there is a cove that still remains a little hidden treasure.

Known as

El Cañuelo

, it is located about five kilometers from Bolonia and can only be accessed by walking along a path between pines and junipers from the

Camarinal lighthouse

.

It is a virgin beach - without any service - and a little less than a kilometer long where you can practice nudism.

But not everything is a beach and a beach bar in Tarifa.

In the city, passing the Puerta de Jerez in the old Andalusian wall, we enter its old town.

Its cobbled streets, flanked by whitewashed buildings, hide inside typical Andalusian patios, shops selling casual

boho-

style clothes

and restaurants.

Tapas in the city

A walk through the center of town is the perfect time to sit on one of its terraces and taste the local cuisine.

If there is something that the locals are especially proud of, it is the almadraba tuna, although when it comes to tapas, the culinary options are endless.

You cannot go to the Andalusian tavern Lola without trying the potato omelette with salmorejo and Iberian ham, or the salad served by its friendly waiters dressed in flamenco aprons.

Another classic, located on the main street, is

El Francés

(Sancho IV el Bravo, 21).

Its montadito or the tuna meatballs are two essentials of this cozy bar that is always usually from boat to boat.

Hidden in a narrow alley,

An Ca Curro

(Calle de Moreno de Mora, 5) is one of the most traditional bars in town and also one of the favorites by locals.

Its walls decorated with photos related to bullfighting already give clues that here grilled meat is the queen.

The sirloin, the secret or the Iberian feather come from the black acorn pig farm owned by its owner.

Ordering a piece of meat is almost a must, but the tomato salad with Roquefort or the scrambled eggplant, all made with local produce, does not leave anyone indifferent.

Located in an old

hammam

next to the wall is La Favela, another of the jewels of Tarifa.

This restaurant is spread over three floors and is decorated with furniture and objects from different parts of the world.

Take advantage of the original structure to create small and cozy spaces where you can enjoy high-quality cuisine, by chef Jesús León.

Cauliflower croquettes, the truffled red tuna cubes or the meatloaf with sweet potato praline will delight guests.

This Cádiz town is the ideal place for those who are still not resigned to keeping their summer clothes.

At this time of year the temperature is almost summer.

Beach, sports and gastronomy are the ingredients that make Tarifa the perfect place for an autumn getaway.
