Nine demonstrators who took part in a march in Algiers in memory of the popular uprising of October 5, 1988 were sentenced Wednesday, October 21 to prison terms, including one to six months, according to an association supporting detainees.

These nine defendants were prosecuted for "
unarmed assembly and incitement to disturbing public order
", ie calls to demonstrate.
Eight were sentenced to six months suspended prison sentence and the ninth to six months off.
Six other participants in this march of supporters of the protest movement "
Hirak
" were released by the court of Sidi M'hamed in Algiers, said the National Committee for the Liberation of Detainees (CNLD), an NGO that lists prisoners of opinion in Algeria.
These demonstrators had been arrested by the police as several hundred "
Hirakists
" tried to march through the center of the capital, defying the ban on all public gatherings imposed because of the health crisis.
This demonstration - the first in the capital since the interruption of the “
Hirak
”
marches
in mid-March - was quickly dispersed.
Nearly 90 people are currently behind bars in Algeria for facts related to the protest, most for posts on Facebook, according to the CNLD.
