After the legislative amendment disturbance last year, many Hong Kong people who participated in the anti-amendment legislative demonstrations went to foreign countries to apply for political asylum. Canada is one of them.

The Canadian Immigration and Refugee Commission (CIMM) unanimously passed yesterday (20th) local time to study the motion for the special resettlement plan for Hong Kong people.

The motion was proposed by Kwan Hye-ching, a member of the House of Commons who was a Hong Kong immigrant. The scope of research includes application procedures, time required, application qualifications, background checks, etc.

According to data from the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, there were 25 Hong Kong citizens applying for political asylum from January to June, and 37 cases are pending.

In early October, local media reported that the Canadian government granted a 30-year-old Hong Kong couple an application for political asylum, stating that they were "convention refugees."

"Convention refugees" are refugees who cannot return to their homeland because of race, religion, political stance, or other reasons under the definition of the UN Convention on the Status of Refugees.

Later, the Chinese Ambassador to Canada Cong Peiwu asked the Canadian government on October 15 to stop providing political asylum to Hong Kong people who had escaped sanctions by the Hong Kong National Security Law, saying that the Hong Kong people were "violent criminals."

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau retorted that "coercive diplomacy" is counterproductive to China itself and to the rest of the world. Regardless of the situation of the Uighurs in Xinjiang and the worrying situation in Hong Kong, Canada will Continue to defend human rights and stand with allies who share common concerns around the world.
