", which

, tells of the so-called
Varus Battle
.
The legendary battle between
Romans
and
Germanic peoples
took place in the year 9 AD and occurred according to various theories either in East Westphalia,
North Germany
or in the
Netherlands
.
A recently unearthed “
find of the
century” in the
Osnabrück region
in
Lower Saxony
suggests that the battle in the Teutoburg Forest * may have occurred.
Where did the Varus Battle take place?

This theory seems to have been based on the production of the
Netflix series
, as the
battle takes place in the Teutoburg Forest
.
The focus of the plot is on the Cheruscan prince Arminius and the Teutons Folkwin and Thusnelda.
The two
Teutons
make it their goal to put
an end to
Roman oppression
.
However, since the
Germanic tribes
are hostile to one another, this undertaking is extremely difficult.
It is important to unite all Germanic tribes under one banner before the liberating
Varus Battle
can take place.
Varus battle in "Barbarians" in the Teutoburg Forest: That's what the series is about
But what exactly is the
Varus Battle
and why is the battle considered legendary?
Similar to the
Netflix series
“Barbarians”, the
Germans
wanted to end
a more than 200 year long oppressive rule of the Romans when they tried to acquire more and more parts near the Rhine.
As the historian Prof. Dr.
Reinhard Wolters told Business Insider that the
Romans
tried
to cooperate with some Germanic tribes.
This enabled them to rule over the area practically through the allied Teutons.
Only the
battle in the Teutoburg Forest
put an end to this indirect rule.

Varus Battle: Teutons cooperated with Romans before the battle in the Teutoburg Forest
Various peoples lived in these areas, such as the
Cherusci
, Chatti, Brukterer and Martians.
The
Romans summarized these tribes
under the umbrella term "
Germanic
".
At that time, the governor of the Roman emperor on the Rhine and Roman commander was Publius Quinctilius Varus, who would later become the namesake of the
battle in the Teutoburg Forest
.
At the beginning
Arminius
, a prince of the Cherusci,
stands at his side
.
Since the Germanic tribe was allied with the Romans, Arminius was trained as a Roman soldier and also enjoyed a Latin training.
Although he was very
familiar
with Commander-in-Chief
Varus
, Prof. Dr.
Wolters, decided the then still young man before the
Varus Battle
,
to switch sides and
turn your back on
the
Romans
.
Historians
today can only speculate
about the reason
.
Battle in the Teutoburg Forest: What role did Arminius play in the Varus Battle?
It is also
not possible to say exactly
how the
battle in the Teutoburg Forest took
place today.
Roman sources
report, however, that the
legionaries were
ambushed and so, despite better training and
armament
, were defeated by the Germanic peoples who knew the area.
Heavy
storms
and rain are said to have made the fight more difficult.
What role Arminius ultimately played in the
Varus Battle
is also uncertain.
What is certain, however, is that he was Commander-in-Chief of the
Teutons
, to whom he is said to have spoken on the battlefield.
After the battle, which is said to have ended after four days,
Varus
and his top officers
took their
own lives on the battlefield.
To those who will still see me at the supermarket checkout with lambskin, a fire lighter, body paint and a bottle of vino: I know exactly what you're thinking, and you're absolutely right!
These are preparations for a very special date *.

The Varus Battle in the Teutoburg Forest was a devastating defeat - with consequences
The
Varus Battle
is considered one of the most devastating Roman defeats and was even referred to by Roman writers as "clades Variana" ("
Varus
defeat").
The
Hermannsdenkmal,
inaugurated in 1875
near the city of
Detmold, is
dedicated to
the supposed hero Arminius
.
The
battle in the Teutoburg Forest also
had fundamental consequences for today's German territory: unlike those countries that were part of the
Roman Empire
, such as
France
and
Belgium
, a different cultural and
linguistic tradition has
developed in this country.
