Viennese pastries offered by a star pastry chef, presence of film crews… The MK2 network which opens its rooms at 8 am to "compensate

At 7:50 am, a few minutes before the doors open, nearly ten courageous people are already waiting on the huge forecourt of the MK2 Bibliothèque cinema (13th century).

Half an hour later, the cashier checks his dashboard.

A little over 80 moviegoers have taken their seats in one of the 20 theaters of the multiplex (for a total of 3,500 seats) where the screenings begin.

Like the nine other MK2 cinema in the capital, the flagship of the group inaugurated the screenings at 8 am on Wednesday… A measure decided to compensate, a little, for the elimination of the evening screenings due to the curfew .

For lack of having obtained exemptions, the cinemas had to give up on the 22 hours screenings, of course, but also on those of 8 pm.

"I am convinced that there is a morning audience"

“Hence the idea of extending our hours in the morning.

It's a gamble, ”acknowledges Nathanaël Karmitz, the group's general manager, who came to welcome the first customers of the day.

“But I'm sure there is a morning audience,” he continues.

"Night workers, insomniacs, the elderly who may prefer the less frequented slots for reasons of distance ..."

The few customers who follow one another at the cash desk of the quasi-deserted multiplex are all young.

To thank them for getting up early, a pain au chocolat from Cédric Grolet (who won the title of best pastry chef in the world) is given to them with their ticket.

Yohann Caron, chef of the new Cédric Grolet Opéra pastry shop, is there to offer them to morning moviegoers.

The general manager of the MK2 group, Nathanael Karmitz, and pastry chef Yohann Caron greeted morning moviegoers with pastries.

“This MK2 operation is very nice and we were immediately won over”, comments the pastry chef.

“We are all so drunk by the restrictions due to the health alert.

Behind him, the crew of Ruben Alves' film "Miss" arrives to greet the spectators of the 8.15am screening.

A canvas before class, breakfast included

"We are there from 8 am because we saw on social networks that breakfast was offered", jokes Jordan, 20 years old, came with a friend to see "Calamity", an animated film "in very good reviews ”.

"We are on vacation so we have time and we could have come later", continues the young man.

“But, we live next door.

So a movie at 8 am, why not… ”.

Valentine, 18, got up very early to come to the cinema… from Persan (Val-d'Oise) where she left at 6.30am!

"It's very good to be able to make yourself a canvas before class," smiles the young woman, a student in the 13th arrondissement, who is about to see "Peninsula", a Korean horror film coming out this Wednesday, all like "Adieu les cons" by Albert Dupontel.

She will be with 5 other spectators in the room.

"The 8-hour session will obviously not replace the evening sessions, in terms of entries," continues Nathanaël Karmitz.

" It is not the goal.

We put this proposal in place first to make a gesture for our loyal customers.

But it is also a way of showing our solidarity with distributors who take the risk of releasing films in this very complicated period, ”he concludes, while inquiring about admissions to the various theaters of the group.
