This Wednesday Spain surpassed the mark of 1 million infected by covid-19.

The Ministry of Health reported 1,005,295 cases of coronavirus registered since the beginning of the epidemic in the country.

In this way, Spain ranks as the first nation in the European Union, and the sixth worldwide, in number of infections, according to the Johns Hopkins University count.

In addition, this Wednesday the largest daily increase in cases of what the authorities consider the second wave of covid-19 in Europe was reported: a total of 16,973 infections.

As for the deaths caused by the virus, the Ministry of Health added 156 deaths, bringing the total to 34,366.

The speed with which the second wave of infections has evolved in Spain has caused that in less than two months 500,000 new cases have been added to the national total.

Of course, the director of the Center for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies of the Ministry of Health, Fernando Simón, assured on Monday that the boom has been more gradual than in the rest of Europe, where the increase in cases has been experienced with a margin as little as three or four weeks.

Among the main differences of this second wave with respect to the first peak of the pandemic is lethality, until this Wednesday around 1%.

Fernando Simón recalled on Monday that in March and April, the fiercest months of this health emergency, fatality was around 12%.

It is also worth noting the asymptomatic cases, which until this Wednesday account for between 40% and 45% of the diagnosed cases.

Spain confirmed the first case of coronavirus on January 31.

It was a patient of German nationality who at that time was traveling on the island of La Gomera, located in the Canary archipelago.

After experiencing a mild infection, he was discharged 14 days later.
