Suspect known as a threat: criticism of security authorities after knife attack in Dresden

2020-10-21T15:24:51.327Z

Politicians question the work of the security authorities in Saxony. The FDP accuses them of inadequately monitoring the alleged perpetrator in Dresden.

In view of the new results of the investigation into the knife attack in Dresden with a fatality, politicians question the work of the security authorities.

According to SPIEGEL information, the suspect is a 20-year-old Syrian who had been known to the Saxon authorities for some time as a violent extremist.

The police consider him a threat, he was also known for contacts in the Islamist scene and had a criminal record for various offenses.

In the meantime, the Attorney General has taken hold of the case.

The investigators assume that the act had a radical Islamist background.

Michael Theurer, FDP parliamentary deputy in the Bundestag, accuses the authorities of failures.

"The alleged knife bomber had a criminal record and was apparently known to the security authorities as a threat," Theurer told SPIEGEL.

The pressing question arises, "why the Saxon security authorities have not monitored the endangered person better".

In addition, it is completely incomprehensible "why the rejected asylum seeker has not long since been deported," said Theurer.

"Germany's security authorities fail again not because of a lack of information, but because they are unable or unwilling to do anything despite all the information."

Theurer's party colleague Konstantin Kuhle, domestic policy spokesman for the FDP parliamentary group, told SPIEGEL: "The background to the fatal knife attack in Dresden must be fully clarified. Should the suspicion of an Islamist motive be substantiated, it must not remain with the clarification and condemnation in individual cases . "

Politicians, society and security authorities needed a precise overview "of how radicalization processes are taking place among Muslim migrants," said Kuhle.

"Neither on the Internet nor in individual mosques or in prisons can we allow ourselves blind spots in which people are radicalized."

Green parliamentary deputy Konstantin von Notz warned that everyone must be aware of the acute threat posed by violent Islamists.

"We have to find a clear rule of law on how we can consistently take action against this violence driven by hatred and inhumanity," he wrote on Twitter.

On October 4, a 55-year-old from Krefeld was attacked in Dresden's old town and seriously injured.

The man later died in the hospital.

His 53-year-old companion from Cologne survived the attack.

Based on the scene of the crime, the police set up a special commission with 29 officers under the name "Schloßstraße".

Thuringia's Interior Minister Georg Maier (SPD) described the act as "hideous".

Islamist terrorism continues to represent a great danger in Germany as well. "The security authorities are called upon to further intensify the fight against terrorism of all forms," Maier told SPIEGEL.

Martin Dulig, Minister of Economic Affairs in Saxony and the SPD's Eastern Representative, told SPIEGEL: "It is a horrific crime that shocked me very much. The background to this gruesome act must now be clarified quickly and unconditionally. I thank the special investigation group for their speedy Work and for the investigation of the suspect. "

The suspect was only released from the juvenile prison at the end of September

The arrest warrant for murder, attempted murder and dangerous assault has now been issued against the suspect arrested on Tuesday.

The man has been tolerated in Germany since 2015.

In November 2018, the Dresden Higher Regional Court sentenced him to a youth sentence of two years and nine months, among other things for soliciting members or supporters of a terrorist organization abroad, obtaining instructions on how to commit a serious, state-endangering act of violence, assault and threats.

According to the authority, this penalty was included in another conviction by the Leipzig District Court in 2019 for assault on law enforcement officers and bodily harm.

The accused had to serve this youth sentence in full.

It was only on September 29, 2020 that he was released from the Regis-Breitingen juvenile prison.

Since then he has been under management supervision.

According to the authorities, the man is currently in possession of a Duldung under the Residence Act.
