The terrorist tunnel located yesterday on the Gaza Strip border was erected by Hamas for offensive purposes.
The tunnel penetrated tens of meters into Israeli territory, and it crossed the fence in the Khan Yunis area in the southern Gaza Strip.
Although the responsibility was placed directly on Hamas, as in any offensive activity leaving the Gaza Strip, it was only as the investigation progressed that it was discovered that it had indeed been excavated by the organization.
Yesterday, IDF engineering forces uncovered the route, which was discovered during the construction of the underground barrier on the Gaza Strip border. According to the IDF, the offensive tunnel was built of concrete, but does not cross the barrier on the border with Israel.
Sources in the Southern Command, who were at the border at the time of the tunnel exposure activity, noted that "this is one of the deepest tunnels located at the border."

The tunnel was unveiled a day after the deployment of military checkpoints on the Gaza Strip border following engineering activity at the fence.
At first there was concern about a security incident, and the farmers in the envelope were asked not to come to the area.
A few hours later, the warning was lifted and the IDF announced that there were no special instructions for the Home Front Command and that there was no danger to the localities.

"Following the IDF's activity near the perimeter fence in the area of the center of the council, the IDF ordered the closure of arteries leading to the border and the cessation of agricultural work near the fence.
"We are in constant contact with military officials and will be updated on any other relevant information."
Defense Minister Bnei Gantz said last night that "the discovery of the tunnel is a testament to the IDF's intelligence and technological capabilities - which will continue to act against threats and undermine the capabilities of terrorist organizations." "In its sovereignty, IDF forces are acting resolutely in the face of terrorist threats, and today they discovered a significant terrorist tunnel that penetrated Israeli territory but did not cross the barrier we set up."
