Valérie Pécresse: "To our teachers"

2020-10-21T11:21:51.242Z

FIGAROVOX / TRIBUNE - The beheading of Samuel Paty should push us to support our teachers because they are the ones who give birth to vocations, underlines Valérie Pécresse. The president of the Ile-de-France region proposes a national reporting unit bringing together police officers and magistrates in order to react vigorously to attacks on secularism.

Valérie Pécresse is president of the Ile-de-France Region.

In 1957, Louis Germain, a teacher, received a letter from one of his former students.

"

Without you, without this loving hand that you extended to the poor little child that I was, without your teaching, and your example, none of this would have happened

."

The letter was signed by Albert Camus, Nobel Prize for Literature.

In response, Louis Germain wrote, "

I believe, throughout my career, that I have respected what is most sacred in the child: the right to seek his truth

."

Professor Samuel Paty was guided by this same ambition.

He was murdered for cartoons but he was also murdered because the Professor can be the one through whom a life can change.

My Samuel Paty was called Marguerite Lena.

She was a professor of philosophy and was inflamed, in the 1980s, for the cause of the Polish union Solidarnosc.

She campaigned for the abolition of torture all over the world.

Freedom and human dignity guided his teaching.

One day, at the end of final year, when I told her of my somewhat agreed choice to prepare for business school, she had this sentence that touched my heart: "

One day you will have to give meaning to your life

”.

We all remember the women and men who entrusted us with one of the keys to our existence.

Today, faced with the fractures of a disoriented society, the mission of our educators is more and more thankless.

Year after year, there is a real crisis of vocations.

We pretend not to see it.

However.

Is there a great Nation without great teachers, a great people without Education?

It is no coincidence that the Islamists attack the School of the Republic, it is because it remains the citadel of a civilization they curse, those of the Enlightenment.

Is there a great Nation without great teachers, a great people without Education?

The tragic death of Samuel Paty struck our teachers in their flesh.

Some of them will return to class on November 2 with fear in their stomachs.

We must guarantee them the full support of the whole Nation.

We must fight the temptation to self-censor.

This is why in each class, I believe it is necessary to devote this first day of return to teaching the values of the Republic, and one of them more precisely: freedom of expression.

The State will have to put itself in a position to ensure to each teacher the protection to which he is entitled.

Faced with unhealthy and intolerable pressures from certain parents and students, faced with insults or violence, teachers must be sure of being heard and supported.

We must put an end to the #pasdevagues so often denounced.

This is why I propose that a national reporting unit bringing together police officers and magistrates be created, in order to free their word but above all to react with the vigor that these attacks on our masters require.

We expect the School to restore the Republic.

The task is too vast to be fulfilled without the support of the whole Nation.

If Samuel Paty was contested and harassed by some, if the terrorist's arm did not tremble, it is because the Republic did not know how to resolutely defend secularism.

In a way, he was a hussar without armies.

We, citizens, students, parents, elected officials, must stand up and get involved alongside our teachers.

Be their army!

We have all known Samuel Patys who illuminated our youth.

These teachers have transformed our life, it is now up to us to give back all its meaning to theirs.
