A volunteer who participated in the Brazilian trial of AstraZeneca's experimental coronavirus vaccine has died, according to the Brazilian health agency Anvisa.
Anvisa said it was notified of the death on Monday, but the International Security and Evaluation Committee overseeing the trial recommended that it continue.
It is unclear whether the volunteer received the vaccine or a placebo injection, and Anvisa said no further information would be released for medical privacy reasons.
The AstraZeneca vaccine, developed with Britain's Oxford University, is being tested in tens of thousands of volunteers around the world.
The trial was suspended last month after a volunteer in Britain developed an illness, but it resumed in most places except the United States, where it remains on hold.
Vaccine experts note that volunteers in clinical trials can get sick or die for a variety of reasons, and they may not be related to the vaccine.
