Covid-19: UK could run out of turkeys at Christmas due to lack of seasonal foreign workers

British poultry workers want the government to exempt from quarantine measures on at least 1,000 workers from Eastern Europe.

The British Poultry Association on Wednesday urged the government to grant foreign seasonal workers exemptions from the quarantine measures imposed in the face of Covid-19, otherwise, it warns, turkeys could be missing from Christmas plates.

"

The proposed exemption would cover at least 1000 seasonal workers from Poland, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, Czech Republic and Slovakia by the end of October

" to address a "

shortage of UK-based workers with the qualifications necessary for the slaughter and processing of poultry,

”argues the British Poultry Council.

"

It is impossible to train British workers given the limited window of time that remains,

" he said in a statement received Wednesday by AFP.

"

If these jobs remain vacant, it will have a significant impact on production and therefore on the cost of food - which implies the risk of people not being able

" to afford meals for Christmas, argues Richard Griffiths, Managing Director of the British Poultry Council.

The end of the year celebrations are already at risk of being partly spoiled by social distancing measures in the face of the second wave of coronavirus, in the country most bereaved in Europe by the pandemic.

With the post-Brexit transition period ending at the end of December, the organization recalls that at a time “

when we are starting a new chapter outside the European Union, it is more important than ever to create measures that help the productivity, creating good jobs and strengthening our food security in an independent post-Brexit UK

”.

Each year around nine million British turkeys are sold, but poultry farmers face a particular backdrop this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, with assembly with people not from the same household banned.

If this measure lasts until Christmas, it could reduce the demand for these birds with a size more suited to large tables, or direct it towards smaller varieties.
