The murder in early October in Dresden of a man killed in a knife attack is treated as a "terrorist" act by the German authorities.

The murder, at the beginning of October in Dresden in Germany, of a man killed in a knife attack is treated as a "

terrorist

"

act

by the German authorities, reviving the concern of the government which warned Wednesday October 21 against "

The Islamist terrorist threat

".

This case comes at a time when France is reeling from the assassination of a professor, beheaded by an Islamist presumed to be of Chechen origin.

In Germany, a 20-year-old Syrian was arrested for the fatal assault on October 4 in the city center of the capital of the regional state of Saxony.

The victim is a 55-year-old German tourist who died as a result of the beatings inflicted.

Another 53-year-old German was seriously injured on this occasion.

The suspect's background on Wednesday led justice to entrust the investigations to the German Federal Prosecutor's Office in Karlsruhe, responsible for terrorism cases, said a spokesperson for the prosecution.

The authorities suspect "

an act on Islamic grounds

", the Dresden prosecutor's office said in a statement.

Interior Minister Horst Seehofer spoke of "

an act with probable political motivation

".

The attack "

once again demonstrates the dangerous nature of Islamist violence

" which "

requires the greatest vigilance,

" he added.

A suspect on file

"

potentially dangerous

"

According to the prosecution, the suspect has already been the subject in Germany of several judicial convictions for acts of violence and also for having acted to recruit support for "

a terrorist organization

".

During his hearing by investigators, he made no statement, said the statement from the prosecution.

According to German media, his DNA was found on the kitchen knife that was used in the murder, and led to his arrest.

Several German media describe him as a supporter of the jihadist organization Islamic State (IS).

He would have been radicalized since his arrival in Germany in 2015, at the height of the influx of migrants from Syria at the time.

Following his convictions, the suspect served prison terms.

He was released on September 29, a few days before the fatal attack on Dresden, and remained listed by the police as potentially "

dangerous

".

The young man did not have official refugee status in Germany but remained “

tolerated

” by the authorities.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has often been accused, especially by the far right, of having contributed to these attacks by generously opening her country's borders to hundreds of thousands of refugees and migrants in 2015.
