The Saint-Régis hotel in Chalon-sur-Saône, the expert opinion of Figaro

2020-10-22T04:40:08.721Z

Recently renovated, this four-star with 36 rooms housed in a Haussmannian building is an ideal base for a stay in the Burgundy city.

7.5 / 10 for the Saint-Régis hotel

Formerly part of the Best Western group, the Saint-Régis hotel received a makeover when the owner changed at the start of 2019. With its 36 rooms, this four-star hotel enjoys a central location on one of the main streets of Chalon-sur-Saône, the first town of Saône-et-Loire in terms of number of inhabitants, known for being the world cradle of photography.

Penalized by a limited number of services and facilities, the hotel nevertheless makes up for it with its spacious and newly renovated rooms, as well as its bar and bistro with radically different atmospheres.

9/10 The situation

Ideal.

We are less than ten minutes walk from the train station, the banks of the Saône, the Place Saint-Vincent and the main city museum, dedicated to the inventor of photography Nicéphore Niepce.

8/10 The decor

On one side of the lobby, a bright bistro that reproduces the splendor of a Parisian bar.

On the other, a bar with a subdued atmosphere whose decoration (wooden counter, velvet chairs ...) recalls that of English pubs.

The rooms have a weighted Art Deco style, soberly decorated with a bed set and a velvet armchair in bright colors and framed drawings or photos on the walls.

    8/10 The bedrooms

The 36 rooms were renovated when the owner changed in 2019. However, some bathrooms (like ours, in room 18) still have the old decoration and are waiting to be refreshed during a second phase of renovation. will end by early 2021. From 16m² for the double room to 28m² for the family room, they are spacious and offer a ceiling worthy of a Haussmannian building.

A "courtesy tray" consisting of tea, coffee and a bottle of water is placed on a large desk.

On the other hand, no trace of the bathrobe mentioned in the description of the rooms on the hotel website ... Although they overlook one of the busiest streets in Chalon, you are hardly bothered by the noise outside, or even by our neighbors upstairs or next door.

    The soundproofing is perfect.

    5/10 The service, the facilities

If the welcome is impeccable, the number of services and facilities is the hotel's weak point.

There is a seminar room with about twenty places, a small luggage room and private parking (12 € per night).

But no room service or wellness area, as you would expect in a four-star.

In addition, the elevator, narrow, is hardly practical when you want to go up to several with several pieces of luggage.

The configuration of the place leaves little choice: no question of disfiguring a historic building.

7/10 At the table and at the bar

At the Bistrot Saint-Régis, the menu of dishes is renewed every two months in order to favor seasonal products (here that of October 2020).

Cod dim sum, vegetarian risotto with Asian flavors ... An Asian touch is brought to French specialties.

The starter, main course and dessert or cheese formula is available at 34 €.

Open every day except Sunday, the bistro has the advantage of having a very large terrace (heated in winter), which can accommodate up to 40 people, almost as many as inside.

On the wine list, priority is given to those from Burgundy (of course!), Even if some Bordeaux and Loire Valley wines find their place there.

At breakfast, we can regret that homemade is not so de rigueur.

On the buffet, the choice of products is wide, of course, but jams with orange juice, almost everything is of industrial origin.

Only cheeses, yogurts and cold meats come from artisans from Saône-et-Loire.

Acceptable thing for a breakfast charged 12 €, but rather annoying from a four-star.

    8/10 The value for money

From € 68 per night in a standard double room to € 99 in a superior double room, the prices are suitable for a four-star city center.

To this is added the tourist tax of € 1.70 per night and per person.

For breakfast, count a supplement of 12 €.

Pets are accepted for € 7 per night.
