The Supreme Court of Poland has almost completely banned abortions
Eleven of the 13 panel judges accepted a petition from right-wing MPs, ruling that a law that allows abortions in the case of birth defects is unconstitutional.
Even before that, abortion access in Catholic Poland was one of the fewest in Europe, and many women underwent the procedure abroad.

The Supreme Court of Poland ruled today (Thursday) that a law allowing abortions of fetuses with birth defects is unconstitutional.
The decision of the Constitutional Court in fact prohibits termination of pregnancy in a situation where malformations are discovered and will further restrict access to abortion in the Catholic state, which is in any case one of the most restricted in Europe.
Only two judges out of the 13 panel members did not support the ruling, which was passed following a petition by right-wing lawmakers who argued that the law violates a clause in the constitution that calls for the protection of every person’s life.
Congenital malformations are the most common reason in Poland for performing abortions.
The repealed law was passed in 1993 after a laboriously reached compromise, and also allowed abortions in cases where the woman's health or life was in danger, or if the pregnancy was the result of rape or another illegal act.
Even before the ruling today, many women in Poland underwent the procedure abroad.

On the grounds of the ruling, the court said that it is impossible to protect a person’s dignity without protecting life.
The ruling was announced by the court's president, Yulia Prazilevska, who is close to the national right-wing government of the Law and Justice Party.
Prior to the decision, police officers were deployed outside the court outside which groups of abortion supporters and their opponents gathered.
Aid organizations earlier this week held demonstrations and international human rights organizations called for no further restrictions on abortions in EU member states.
The European Commission's Commissioner for Human Rights, Donia Miatowicz, said it was a "sad day" for women's rights.
"The abolition of justification for almost all legal abortions in Poland is tantamount to a ban and violation of human rights," she tweeted.
"Today's ruling of the Constitutional Court means underground or overseas abortions for those who can afford it and even greater suffering for all others."
