With the participation of Syria, this evening the high-level special session of the Global Education Meeting 2020 organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization "UNESCO", was held this evening through the "Zoom" program on the Internet.

Participants in the meeting, which was held between 20 and 22 October, discussed issues of protecting domestic and international funding for education, safely reopening schools, focusing on inclusiveness, justice and gender equality, rethinking education and learning, and harnessing equal access to learning technology and communication services to achieve an agenda. The fourth goal of the sustainable development goals related to the quality of education and agreement on a concept note adopted by the Global Education Alliance, which was launched by UNESCO last March and includes 150 countries and international organizations to support the safe reopening of schools to ensure the continuation of education in light of the Corona epidemic.

In his speech during the meeting, Minister of Education Dr. Darem Tabbaa, Chairman of the National Committee for UNESCO, indicated that the meeting constitutes a strategic opportunity for everyone in order to preserve commitments to education and expand its scope as a basic way to achieve sustainable development, noting the ideas put forward during the meeting, especially related to confronting the threat of the Corona virus and its effects on The education sector and the proposed steps to achieve the sustainable development goals.

Dr. Tabbah pointed out that, in addition to facing the challenge of the effects of the "Corona" virus, Syria is making efforts and mobilizing the available energies nationally to confront the repercussions of the unjust terrorist war against it, unilateral coercive measures and the unjust blockade against it ten years ago, which directly and severely impeded the development process and affected all the life facilities of the citizen. Syrian, including the education in which it is a pioneer at the Arab level.

Dr. Tabbaa said: “We are ready to engage in any global review of the guaranteeing commitments to provide education opportunities for all and for a lifetime and to ensure bridging the time gap in the process of achieving the sustainable development goals by 2030,” indicating the Syrian government's efforts to ensure the right to education guaranteed by the constitution to all children, as it simulates the proportion of spending on Education allocated nationally, the rates in force internationally. The Ministry of Education has defined, in light of the current circumstances, a national strategy for education that takes into account alternatives to education and virtual distance education and continues to apply it despite all the difficulties.

Tabaa praised the cooperation with UNESCO and the openness to the pioneering experiences and experiences led by the organization in the fields of confronting the "Corona" virus and ensuring the achievement of sustainable development, pointing to the seriousness of preparing national reports that confirm the follow-up of the use of alternative learning methods and their results on the continuation of the educational process and compensation for the educational loss of children.

Tabbaa explained that these commitments do not only concern the educational sector and its teachers, but rather an official, societal and general humanitarian responsibility that requires everyone to make efforts to produce a general mood and popular awareness that believes in the complementarity of roles and the sharing of responsibilities.

At the end of his speech, Tabbah said: “We hope UNESCO will send a frank, global appeal calling on member states to intervene and make efforts to stop the attacks, lift the sanctions and unjust sieges imposed against Syria, as well as support the Syrian national initiatives that guarantee the right to education for all, meet the basic needs and services of citizens, and confirm the progress. Move forward in achieving the sustainable development goals ”.

It is noteworthy that the meeting was opened with the participation of the Secretary of the Syrian National Committee for UNESCO, the Director of the National Center for Educational Curriculum Development, School Health and Informatics Managers, and with the interventions of the Director General of UNESCO, the Secretary General of the United Nations, the Prime Minister of Norway, the Minister of Education of Ghana and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and British Development, with the participation of the Queen of Belgium and the heads of state of Portugal, the Republic of Colombia, Kenya, Angola and Namibia. And the heads of government of Italy, Morocco and Spain and the Deputy Prime Minister of Uzbekistan, as well as representatives of the United Nations and international organizations and the ministers of education for a number of Arab and international countries.

On October 20, a technical session was held for the Global Education 2020 meeting via the Internet, in which the participants focused on a set of priorities and topics that dealt with protecting domestic and international funding for education and safely reopening schools.
