The Free State wants to provide fresh air in the classrooms with 37 million euros.

He supports the purchase of CO2 traffic lights and air purification devices - the latter only under very special conditions.

Munich / Stephanskirchen - The Otfried Preußler Primary School in Stephanskirchen (Rosenheim district) is a pioneer: This week, Petra and Wolfgang Schabus, managing directors of an electrical engineering company in the community, presented a self-developed carbon dioxide traffic light in the schoolyard.

It jumps to yellow at a concentration of more than 1000 ppm (parts per million, German particles per million) and to red at 2000 ppm - at the latest then it must be ventilated until the traffic light is green again.

“It's an optical memory,” says Petra Schabus.

The company has been selling the traffic light since 2009, until now primarily to companies.

Now there should be a new market: schools.

The local elementary school has already struck - it ordered 30 devices (unit price 345 euros).

From now on, the municipalities can submit applications to the district governments for reimbursement of costs for investments in “ventilation in accordance with infection protection” - the guideline was sent yesterday and is also available to “Münchner Merkur”.

Accordingly, the purchase of a CO2 traffic light is subsidized with 7.27 euros per student.

Air purification devices are also subsidized - with a maximum amount of 3500 euros per room.

Neubiberg invests 100,000 euros

The need is likely to be great.

Such devices have already been discussed in a number of communities.

Neubiberg, for example, wants to spend 100,000 euros on air purification devices in his two primary schools.

Christian Kähler from the University of the Federal Armed Forces presented his research on room air filtration to the local council and recommended the purchase of such devices.

Six carbon dioxide measuring devices are to be bought in Otterfing (Miesbach district).

The district is planning further purchases, but before a larger order of the much more expensive air purifiers, which would then also have to be put out to tender, the district office wants to check the funding guidelines.

However, very strict conditions are defined for the financial support of air purifiers: Air purification devices, as stated in the guideline, come “primarily” into consideration for classrooms and teachers' rooms that “are not sufficient in the sense of the general hygiene plan for schools by specifically opening windows ... can be ventilated. ”However, rooms without (or with only very small) windows are rare in schools.

A school expert on the “Münchner Merkur”: For fire protection reasons - to save the children if necessary - most classrooms have windows.

The directive is narrow-minded.
