Cathay Pacific announced its restructuring plan on Wednesday (21st), cutting 8,500 positions globally, suspending Cathay Dragon Airways from today, and issuing new contracts to active flight attendants.

The terms of the new contract include adjustments to the basic salary and the "cap" of the flight hourly salary.

Wang Simin, chairman of the Cathay Pacific Service Staff Association, said on the commercial channel program "Starting on a Sorry Day" today (23) that 80% of employees think they need to change the terms of the contract before signing, and described it as an "unequal contract"; She pointed out that employees are willing to ride through the difficult times with the company, but hope that Cathay Pacific will convert the new contract to a short-term contract and return to the normal level of employee treatment after the epidemic passes.

Wang Simin, chairman of the Cathay Pacific Service Staff Association, said on the program that Cathay Pacific held an online briefing to employees yesterday. Although employees were allowed to leave messages to ask questions, they could not see the content of the questions.

She believes that the company has insufficient explanation of the new contract, and the deadline for signing within 14 days is too short, at least one month.

She said that some employees who had signed contracts later expressed regret.

An employee's hourly pay for flying was reduced by 40%

She described the new contract as an "unequal contract." Taking herself as an example, the hourly flight pay was reduced by 20%, but according to her knowledge, some employees were even reduced by 40%, and she questioned whether the management has ever cut pay.

She said that if an employee chooses not to sign a contract, he will only receive long-term service payment and one month's notice payment, which is worse than the compensation package received by the laid-off employee. She believes that the employee is now in a dilemma and feels that the company wants to force the employee away.

She worries that Cathay Pacific will become a precedent, causing other companies to follow and introduce similar policies.

The union met with the management at 3 pm

She pointed out that the union sent a questionnaire to employees yesterday and received 2,000 responses. Eight of them were dissatisfied with the new contract and asked Cathay Pacific to improve the terms before signing the new contract.

She pointed out that employees are willing to ride through the difficult times with the company, and hope that the company will convert the new contract to a short-term contract and return the employee benefits to normal levels when the industry recovers.

She pointed out that the union will meet with management at 3 pm today to discuss layoffs and new contracts.

She pointed out that some employees had consulted their lawyers on contract matters on their own, while others had asked the Labour Department for help.
