Friday morning, the warring parties in Libya signed a national and permanent ceasefire, broadcast live on the internet, after five days of discussions in Geneva organized under the auspices of the UN.

Plunged into chaos since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011, Libya is today torn between two rival powers: the Government of National Unity (GNA), recognized by the UN and based in Tripoli, and the authorities from the East, allies of Marshal Khalifa Haftar, a strong man supported by part of the elected Parliament and its president, Aguila Saleh.

Each is supported by international sponsors.

For several months, Germany has increased diplomatic efforts to try to bring the belligerents back to a lasting ceasefire and political negotiations, as well as their regional support for compliance with the arms embargo.

It had already organized, in January in Berlin, an international conference on the non-interference of regional actors in Libya and respect for the embargo, so many commitments regularly broken since then.

But in recent weeks, the inter-Libyan negotiations have accelerated in order to define the conditions for a lasting ceasefire.
