The abdominal surgeon and colon cancer specialist Susanne Rogers has been promoted to chief physician at the Penzberg hospital.

This is more than just a personality.

The 100-bed clinic has expanded Rogers' area more and more in the past.

And it goes on: Now there is also an oncological day clinic.

Penzberg - Two and a half years ago, Susanne Rogers came from the clinic in Agatharied to the Penzberg hospital.

It was a stroke of luck to win her for Penzberg, said clinic managing director Claus Rauschmeier on Thursday.

The native of Munich, who helped set up a colon cancer center in Agatharied, took over the department for general and visceral surgery in Penzberg in July 2018, also known as abdominal surgery.

The declared goal at the time was to expand abdominal surgery.

According to Rauschmeier, it was a great advantage that Penzberg already had a high level of expertise in gastroenterology, i.e. in diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.

For two and a half years it has been apparent from the popularity and the number of patients that one is “now a well-known and serious address”, although Penzberg is a small house of basic and standard care.

Klinik Penzberg: Promotion to the chief physician - after a "Tour des Force"

Against this background, Susanne Rogers was appointed chief physician for general and visceral surgery on October 1st.

"We are proud of it," said Rauschmeier.

Incidentally, she was the first head physician in the Starnberg clinic network, as he added.

On Thursday, Rogers described the appointment as a “very big vote of confidence”.

She feels this is something “very special”.

She is grateful to the people of Penzberg because she was received with “incredible benevolence” at the time, as well as her colleagues and employees “who have supported me from the start”.

A "two and a half year tour de force" lies behind them, in which more and more complex operations have been added.

The number of patients in the field of abdominal surgery, including colon cancer patients, has more than doubled over the years, said the 52-year-old.

The surgeon estimates that the number will have tripled by the end of 2021.

She says she is overwhelmed by how well a small house can offer such high quality.

Which, in their opinion, is “due to the spirit of the house”.

"The focus is on people, the patients can feel that they are in good hands here."

New chief physician Susanne Rogers wants to further develop the oncology area at Klinik Penzberg

The surgeon and colon cancer specialist (“I have big plans”) now wants to further develop the oncology area at the Penzberg hospital.

Some steps have already been taken.

“A milestone” was the establishment of a weekly tumor conference with the Starnberg and Seefeld clinics - cases are discussed with specialists from various disciplines.

Another "milestone", according to Susanne Rogers, was that she was appointed "Senior Intestinal Surgeon" by the German Cancer Society in 2019 - for this you have to prove a certain number of operations over five years.

Current "milestone": opening of an oncological day clinic

A current “milestone” is the opening of an oncological day clinic.

Correctly it is called "Medical Supply Center Penzberg" (MZV).

The Penzberg Clinic has founded a subsidiary for this purpose, "MZV GmbH".

The managing director is Claus Rauschmeier.

If a patient with colon cancer is treated, it is an interdisciplinary matter.

With the MZV, a specialist in oncology will now also be added, said Rauschmeier.

Michael Sandherr, who is also head of the hematology and oncology departments at the Penzberg and Starnberg clinics, is responsible for the medical management.

Sandherr had run a group practice with Michael Perker in Weilheim, which was transferred to the MZV.

Other branch offices are in Bad Tölz and Münsing.

In Penzberg, the day clinic on the clinic premises should be ready in December.

Klinik Penzberg comments on the corona situation

The Penzberg clinic also commented on the corona situation on Thursday: "We are well prepared," said Penzberg clinic boss Claus Rauschmeier on Thursday in view of the increasing number of corona cases in the district.

In spring - for the first wave of the corona pandemic - spatial and personnel structures were created and maintained.

At the moment, the exploding numbers of infections have not yet had an impact on the number of inpatient Covid-19 patients or intensive care patients, said Rauschmeier.

But he reckons that this will still be the case.

As of Thursday noon, there were no infected patients at the Penzberg hospital.

An urgent suspicion was not confirmed yesterday.

According to the clinic's managing director, an area with seven beds is provided as an isolation area on one ward in the Penzberg hospital to accommodate Covid 19 patients.

There is a doctor as a pandemic officer as well as rapid tests.

The Penzberger Klinik has also remained restrictive with regard to the visitor rules.

For example, only one permanent visitor is allowed per patient for one hour a day.

According to the head of the clinic, all inpatients are also tested.

Unlike in spring, predictable operations are carried out and not postponed.
