In Colombia, the department of Antioquia, in the northwest of the country, declared a hospital red alert due to the high level of occupancy in intensive care units and intermediate respiratory care units.

In a statement from the Antioquia government published this Thursday, it is indicated that for more than a week these units have an occupation of over 80% in the Aburrá Valley and Oriente regions.

Governor Aníbal Gaviria said that the decision to declare a red alert was also influenced by the high number of coronavirus infections that have been registered in the department in recent days.

With this measure that has already entered into force, elective surgeries are suspended or deferred in hospital institutions, that is, those that do not jeopardize the lives of patients, as well as procedures that are not urgent, "in order to have available medical personnel, equipment and supplies to attend to the red alert, ”said the governor.

As of Thursday, the Colombian Ministry of Health confirmed 990,270 cases of coronavirus and 29,636 deaths.
