At least the average of the nine and the residence in the center of Milan: these are two of the requirements to be admitted to the Manzoni high school from the next school year.

The reason - we read in the admission criteria to the premiere of 2021/2022 - is the coronavirus emergency: on the one hand the spaces are few and therefore only eight classes can be done, on the other the students who are already there, especially those who are now in first grade, will need to be "reoriented" and therefore "it is good to try to welcome in the first classes those students who, reasonably, are expected to be very motivated and not in need of any reorientation".

Therefore, there are two requirements to be able to enroll in one of the most renowned high schools in the city: a meritocratic one (ie the average of 10 or 9 in the seventh grade in Italian, mathematics and English) and a territorial one.

In fact, priority will be given to young people with a high average who live in zone 1, the one where the school is located, i.e. in the center.

Following are the closest areas.

The school council approved the new rules with 15 votes in favor and 4 against, but not all students liked the news.

For this reason, today, the last day of school in Lombardy where distance learning will resume for all high schools, they organized an information and protest picket.

"We find it inadmissible - they explained on the social networks of the Manzoni political collective - that a PUBLIC school, which should be accessible to all and all, shamelessly places a limit on enrollment".

Avoiding a procession so as not to create crowds, the boys stood apart along the corridor of the presidency and a delegation was received by the vice president.

"The theme of overcrowding, which by now can no longer be ignored - they explained -, remains only and exclusively a facade, thanks to a strategic move designed to bring our high school to be ever closer to the ideal school of excellence" but "we do not want an elite school that sees its students as mere trophies to be bragging about, leaving behind those who have not had the opportunity to receive an education that grants an average of 8 or those who need more time , more experienced, those who believe it is not the votes that determine their abilities. "
