In future, a maximum of 40 km / h may be driven on the “Am Öferl” road.

The city council's transport committee decided on Tuesday.

Numerous residents, several businesses and traffic officer Manuel Neulinger even applied for "Tempo 30".

But that was rejected by a wafer-thin majority.

  • In the future, a maximum speed of 40 km / h will be allowed on the “Am Öferl” road.

  • Numerous residents had requested a speed limit of 30 km / h.

  • The district office itself sees the compromise as critical, because “Am Öferl” is an “important inner-city main street”.

Weilheim

- A very unusual alliance had formed to fight for a speed limit on the local roads Schießstattweg 1-3 and Am Öferl.

Already in July, 50 residents sent a corresponding petition to the city.

At the end of September, a well-founded application followed by Manuel Neulinger (Greens), the city council's traffic officer.

In addition, applications were received from the Montessori children's home and from companies in this area - from Harrer, Bremicker and Autohaus Gallner as well as from the municipal utilities that operate the parking garage at Öferl.

They are all calling for a speed reduction for this street, most of them to 30 km / h.

According to Neulinger there are danger spots "every few dozen meters", from the confusing 90-degree curve at the house of the Evangelical Church (next to which there is also a day care center) to numerous dangerous entrances and exits to the Montessori Children's home.

This is a main route between Weilheimer west and the train station, which is used by many cyclists and pedestrians.

Horst Martin (SPD) also made a fiery plea in the transport committee for Tempo 30 in this area.

Because the wide road induces motorists to drive too fast, despite bicycle protection lanes on both sides.

With more residential buildings in the area, the number of pedestrians and cyclists will increase, so Martin;

a speed limit would therefore be an important point in Weilheim's efforts to become more bicycle-friendly.

Noise and air pollution affect others even more

Weilheim's head of the Public Order Office, Andreas Wunder, urged that these traffic-related arguments be brought to the fore and not the issue of noise and air pollution.

Residents of the state highways in Weilheim, especially the Upper City, are even more affected by the latter - and they could feel disadvantaged.

In this regard, it is necessary to wait for the ongoing "noise action planning", which has been postponed due to the corona.

Wunder also warned of numerous follow-up applications: One must "be careful that we do not at some point have a speed limit of 30 on all main roads and ultimately the traffic comes to a standstill".

Andreas Halas (ÖDP) contradicted this argumentation: The Federal Environment Agency had proven that "Tempo 30" in most cases in no way reduced the flow of vehicle traffic.

CSU City Councilor Stefan Zirngibl, who was asked for a statement as an economic advisor, does not fear a serious loss of time (“even if you are there several times a day with a service vehicle”) and spoke out in favor of reducing the speed of the Öferl.

Weilheim's fire brigade, on the other hand, pointed out that more tempo 30 areas would be problematic for the helpers who would have to come quickly to the fire station during operations - in civilian clothes.

Klaus Gast (CSU) called the arguments for a speed limit at the Öferl "understandable", but there are many similar situations in Weilheim and shouldn't be about where someone is campaigning for it.

“If so, then you would have to look at the entire urban area and make a systematic decision”, says Gast, “that is a question of justice”.

For traffic officer Neulinger that cannot be a reason for a no in this case.

After all, the broad alliance of applicants is “a very strong signal”.

It is also important to take preventive action “and not just when accidents have happened,” says Neulinger.

Background: The traffic clerk of the Weilheim police had stated that there was no accumulation of accidents at the Öferl.

District office sees decision as critical

Wolfgang Mini warned the traffic authority of the district office that a precise check and reliable figures were necessary before a speed limit decision - and added: "The Öferl is an inner-city main street, and I see it as problematic to restrict it."

Weilheim's traffic committee nevertheless decided on a speed limit for the entire length of the street from the confluence on Schützenstrasse to the Zarges company.

However, “Tempo 30” is not ordered - that was rejected with five to four votes.

However, there was a majority in favor of "Tempo 40", which Mayor Markus Loth (BfW) had proposed as a compromise;

only Guest voted against it.

Hans Vollmann (BfW) emphasized that this speed limit would then have to be checked.

According to Mini, a “fixed speed camera” would now even be permitted - which was new information for the city.
