The route of the blue line of the light rail on Emek Refaim Street in Jerusalem was finally approved this week by the District Planning and Construction Committee.
The train route in Emek Refaim, which is about a kilometer long, connects the intersection of Emek Refaim streets and Bethlehem Road in the north to the Oranim junction in the south.
A passenger station will be built in the center of the street.
Changes in traffic arrangements will significantly reduce traffic, which is currently causing severe environmental nuisance.
In the northern part of the street, the train will operate via a single track, so as not to impair the access of a private vehicle to the residents of the area.
The decision was made following a district court ruling that the plan should be returned for further hearing to the district committee, after it receives the local committee's recommendation.
The local committee determined that this was the best alternative.
The expectation is that the train will lead to a drastic reduction in vehicular traffic, expose the street to train passengers and strengthen the historic character of the street.
