The personality of Donald Trump, which arouses a quasi-adoration among his supporters and a violent rejection of his opponents, has contributed to polarizing the ballot to the extreme, which has become a quasi-referendum on his person.
The Covid-19 pandemic, which has hit the United States hard, like other developed countries, has added additional tensions, economic and health, to this unprecedented election.
Both of these factors had the unintended effect of significantly increasing participation.
