Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan on Sunday accused Emmanuel Macron of "attacking Islam" after the French president defended the publication of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad after the beheading last week of a professor who showed some of them to his students .

"President Macron could have played appeasement and denied space to extremists rather than creating additional polarization and marginalization that inevitably leads to radicalization," Imran Khan wrote on Twitter.

“It is unfortunate that he chose to encourage Islamophobia by attacking Islam rather than terrorists who practice violence, whether they are Muslims, white supremacists or 'Nazi ideologues', continued the Pakistani prime minister.

Emmanuel Macron said Wednesday evening that France would not renounce "cartoons", including those of the Prophet Muhammad, which resulted in the teacher being assassinated.

Two weeks ago, he spoke of "Islamist separatism" and the need to "structure Islam" in France, while the executive presented a future bill on the project.
