'Diavolo',

died last night in Correggio (Reggio Emilia)

After the war he was accused of the murder of Don Umberto Pessina and only in the 1990s was he completely cleared of the reopening of the trial.

Germano Nicolini was born on November 26, 1919. Captured in Rome by the Germans, he escaped from captivity and entered the Sap battalion of the Fratelli Manfredi brigade of which he became commander.

In the postwar period he became mayor of Correggio (which he had liberated) but was arrested in '47, accused of the murder of Don Umberto Pessina and then sentenced to 22 years.

He was released from prison for a pardon and in 1994 it emerged who the real murderer was: William Gaiti (now dead) who confessed after the letter to the Resto del Carlino 'Who knows how to speak' of the late partisan commander and former deputy Otello Montanari opened a gash on the so-called 'triangle of death', where numerous churchmen were killed by communist partisans.

Thus Diavolo and two other partisans, Antonio Prodi, known as Negus, and Ello Ferretti, Fanfulla, were exonerated and finally acquitted in the review process held in Perugia.

"Forgive them? You can't use the word forgiveness. I was an easy target, a young town mayor. They hit me because it was hard to accept the talk of reconciliation", said Diavolo a few months ago, when asked about the fact that the leaders of the PCI at the time knew who the real perpetrator of the crime was.

On 25 April, in a long interview with ANSA, 'Al Dievel' also spoke about the Covid emergency.

"The important thing - was his message - is that, even from a tragic event like this, we learn to improve ourselves, as people, as communities and as nations. Democracy is not a sure conquest forever, it must be cultivated and must be supported by it. the principles, day after day, not only in the statements but also and above all in the behavior and respect for those values that allowed us to conquer it 75 years ago ".
