The Secretary for Development, Wong Wai-lun published a blog today (25), mentioning that in order to maintain the health of the water supply network, effectively manage water loss, and apply different technologies to deal with water leakage, the "intelligent network" that the Water Supplies Department is gradually establishing is continuing. Monitor the operation of the pipe network and detect water pipe leakage as early as possible. Last year, the Water Supplies Department has detected about 400 leaks in fresh water pipes through the "intelligent pipe network", including individual large-scale concealed water pipes, and has followed up and completed repairs to cope with the future development of the "intelligent pipe network" , Introduce more advanced water pipe leak detection technology.

By analyzing the water flow, water pressure and other data collected by the "intelligent pipe network", we can monitor whether there is any leakage in the water supply pipe network.

Wong Wai Lun pointed out that Hong Kong’s water supply network consists of water pipes with a total length of more than 8,000 kilometers, most of which are buried underground and are large and complex.

The hilly terrain of Hong Kong causes the water supply pressure to be higher than that of other cities. In addition, frequent road traffic and construction have caused a lot of interference to underground water pipes, increasing the risk of water pipe bursting or leakage.

Therefore, the Water Supplies Department adopts a multi-pronged strategy. In addition to replacing and repairing aging water pipes, it has also launched a "intelligent network" project.

2,400 water pipe monitoring areas will be completed by 2024

Zhang Junshuo, a senior engineer (leakage management) of the Water Supplies Department, said that the "intelligent pipe network" divides the water distribution network into multiple independent monitoring areas, and then uses high-tech monitoring and sensing equipment to collect water flow, water pressure and other data, and then uses computers Analyze and continuously monitor whether there is any leakage in the water supply network.

According to the plan, the whole Hong Kong fresh water distribution pipeline network will be divided into about 2,400 monitoring areas. Currently, more than 1,300 monitoring areas have been established. It is expected that the remaining monitoring areas will be completed in 2024.

Zhang Xuxu pointed out that last year the Water Supplies Department had detected about 400 leaks in fresh water pipes through the "intelligent pipe network", including leaks in individual large concealed water pipes, and had followed up and completed repairs.

In line with the future development of the "intelligent pipe network", the Water Supplies Department will introduce more advanced leak detection techniques for water pipes, such as the use of spherical floating water instruments with built-in leak detection devices to locate the leak location in the water pipe along the direction of water flow.

Formulate four measures to manage water pipe network

Liu Qijin, an engineer (leakage management) of the Water Supplies Department, said that the implementation of the "intelligent pipe network" will help the Water Supplies Department formulate water supply pipe network management measures.

First, collect data from the "intelligent pipe network", screen out the monitoring areas with obvious water loss, and arrange for leak detectors to conduct segmented tests on the site, detect and determine the location of water pipe leakage; second, by installing pressure relief devices, Reduce the excessively high water pressure to an appropriate level, thereby reducing water pipe leakage and extending the life of the water pipe; third, rapid repair of leaking and bursting water pipes; fourth, replacing or repairing water pipes that are not cost-effective to repair.

"Intelligent Pipe Network" helps owners detect leakage early

Due to aging, private public pipes in some housing estates may leak. The former president of the Hong Kong Association of Property Management Companies, Tan Guorong, said that the "intelligent pipe network" and a series of measures by the Water Supplies Department help owners detect leakage early. The Department also provides appropriate technical support to assist the property management company in following up the case.

He said that the department has also organized briefing sessions and issued guidelines to raise the awareness of owners and property management companies of leak detection and maintenance of pipes.
