The Chairman of the Defense Committee of the Russian Federation Council, Viktor Bondarev, stressed today that Russia's defense capabilities are provided by a strong air and missile defense system, which even the most recent American attack missile modifications cannot overcome.
"The abandonment of the 9M729 missile in the European part will not affect Russia's security and borders," Bondarev said in an interview with Sputnik, explaining that Moscow would not concede anything related to its national interests and security considerations.
Bondarev called on the United States to take reciprocal steps and work to abide by the INF Treaty.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced earlier, against the backdrop of the United States ’withdrawal from the INF Treaty, that Moscow is willing of its own free will to refrain from deploying 9M729 missiles in the European part of Russia, but on condition that there are reciprocal steps by NATO.
