Interior Minister Aryeh Deri emphasized today (Monday) that he will work to preserve the status and independence of the chief rabbis of Israel.

NEWS on the recommendation of the Ombudsman for Complaints against Judges, retired Judge Uri Shoham, to examine the continuation of his tenure as a judge of the Chief Rabbi of Israel, Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef.
In a conversation with Rabbi Yosef today, Deri protested "the outrageous and offensive recommendation of retired judge Shoham in his case."
The minister clarified that "reformers and others must not intimidate the chief rabbis of Israel and rabbis in general and try to shut up and bind their hands in various and strange petitions, whose whole purpose is to harm the way of Judaism given to us from generation to generation."
"As chairman of the Shas movement, I will do everything in my power to preserve the status and independence of the chief rabbis of Israel, who act in accordance with the law and express their clear opinion on matters of religion and Judaism," Deri added.
"The firm opinion of Rishon Lezion against introducing women's tests to the rabbinate, as well as against the reformist ideas, is committed to being heard without fear and without prejudice."

Shoham published his recommendation after Rabbi Yosef had recently spoken out against the court system in general, and the Supreme Court in particular.
The decision was made after a complaint filed by the Reform Center for Religion and State, through Adv. Uri Nerov, with quotes from Rabbi Yosef against the High Court.
"You know that the High Court feels superior to everyone in everything, it intervenes in everything," said Rabbi Yosef. In the same lesson, the rabbi attacked the reformers, stating that "they falsified the Torah." He also made it clear that he did not intend to obey the court order. , "I will shut down the whole test system, there will be chaos and noise and there will be."

The Committee for the Selection of Judges operates similarly to the Committee for the Appointment of Judges, and its representatives are the Chief Rabbis of Israel, the Minister of Justice, Knesset members and representatives of the Bar Association.
The committee is under the almost complete control of Shas, and the chances of such a recommendation being accepted are low to non-existent.
