Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan today (Monday) called on his citizens not to buy French products, amid anger in the Muslim world over Muhammad's illustrations in France.
In France, on the other hand, their use is defended, after the beheading of teacher Samuel Patti, who introduced them during a class on freedom of expression in the classroom.
Erdogan, who has a history of strained relations with French President Emmanuel Macron, said Paris was promoting an anti-Muslim agenda.
"I call on all my citizens from here never to help or acquire French challengers," the Turkish president said in a speech in Ankara.
Erdogan has already raised calls for similar boycotts in the past, including a request not to buy American electronics in 2018, but this has not been answered.
He called on world leaders to protect Muslims "if there is oppression against them" in France, claiming they were going through a "lynching campaign similar to the one the Jews went through in Europe before World War II."
Erdogan, who has said in recent days that Macron needs medical treatment for his remarks against radical Islam, added that "European leaders should tell the French president to stop his hate campaign".
In the EU, however, they sided with Macron and condemned Erdogan's remarks.
