Excursion traffic reaches new heights: joys in the mountains, suffering on the way home

The number of day trippers to Brauneck, Sunntratn, Herzogstand and other popular excursion destinations in the southern Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen district was enormous on Sunday.

Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen -

To use the beautiful autumn day for a trip to the mountains: That was a good idea on Sunday - but not too original.

The rush to the most popular destinations in the southern district was enormous.

The mountain railways were happy about a good deal.

"It was madness, almost a little exaggerated," says Peter Lorenz, managing director of the Brauneckbahn.

Ultimately, however, it was a “great day” from his point of view.

His company sold around 2,300 ascents and almost as many descents.

Visitors have to queue for up to an hour at the Herzogstandbahn

"Impeccable, everything in the green", is also the conclusion of Bernd Heilingbrunner, deputy operations manager of the Herzogstandbahn.

According to Heilingbrunner, 1,400 ascent and descent were bought.

According to Heilingbrunner, those who arrived between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. during the rush hour had to stand in line for up to an hour - also because a maximum of 20 people are allowed to enter a gondola to protect against infection.

The downhill runs, which you have to reserve in advance for a certain time, were sold out at noon.

Whether Brauneck, Hirschbachsattel or other mountains: "Wherever there is a parking lot, you are literally overrun on days like this," says Lenggries Mayor Stefan Klaffenbacher.

“There are no longer any quiet places.” The region “burst at the seams” again on Sunday.

Day trippers park in Gaißach to the rescue route

Gaißach's mayor, Stefan Fadinger, reports on "hopelessly overcrowded parking lots" and sometimes "chaotic conditions".

Sunntratn and Schweigeralm are among the popular excursion destinations in his community.

In the local council, Fadinger now wants to address an acute problem that he observed on Sunday: When the Sunntratn parking lot is full, many drivers stand on the newly renovated connecting road towards Untermberg.

“This is an important escape route, on the one hand for the residents, on the other hand for the entire area of the Steinbach Valley,” says Fadinger.

The mayor therefore suggests an extension of the stopping ban.

Meanwhile, the town hall chief is powerless in the face of the fact that many motorists bypass the traffic jam on the B 13 and B 472 by driving through Gaißach - and then clogging the streets from Untergries to the confluence of the local connecting road with the B 472.

“The line of cars stood up the Gaißacher Berg until 7 p.m.,” says Fadinger.

The overload of the alternative route through Gaißach also occurs on working days.

"We can only wait for the Tölzer Nordspange and hope that it starts as soon as possible."

Construction site on the B472 does not play a major role for traffic jams in Bad Tölz - blocked Töl7 is more likely

Lars Werner, traffic expert with the Tölzer police, also found that motorists - some with local knowledge, some guided by the GPS system - drive via Gaißach is "annoying, but not forbidden".

Otherwise, the official noted a traffic volume for Sunday, as was to be expected on one of the last beautiful autumn days.

The backlogs were exacerbated by "one or the other accident", such as around 2:50 p.m. at the confluence of the Gaißacher local connection road with the B 472 (see page 5).

Ultimately, the current construction site on the B 472 (junction Gaißacher Straße / Winet) did not play a major role in the traffic jam.

Since the weekend it has been possible to pass two lanes again on a swiveled lane, the traffic light regulation has been lifted.

The speed limit of 30 kilometers per hour in the construction site area was irrelevant on Sunday, because here the cars could at best drive at walking pace anyway.

Can you still keep the necessary corona distance on the mountain?

The blocking of Töl 7 from Tölz in the direction of Königsdorf was a little more significant, said Werner.

According to Werner, the volume of traffic on the district road is actually not particularly high, "but that too has to be compensated," he says.

"If there is already a shortage everywhere, that is enough to put additional strain on inner-city traffic and the B 472." Overall, his conclusion is: "There was too much traffic for too little infrastructure."

The rush of visitors worries many people with a view to the corona infection situation.

“Sometimes I see it as problematic to keep the necessary distance on the mountain,” says Lenggries mayor Klaffenbacher.

His colleague in Gaißach, Fadinger, also points out that some of the heavily frequented paths are “pretty narrow”.

He sees a certain contradiction in the fact that the day trippers are on the one hand not afraid to head for such overcrowded hiking destinations, but on the other hand they apparently prefer to drive by car than with the BRB for fear of corona infection.

On the other hand, mountain railway boss Lorenz sees no covid risk in the rush of day trippers.

"The people stood in line with an exemplary distance - and there is enough space up on the mountain to keep their distance anyway."
