Russia's ambassador to Washington, Anatoly Antonov, announced today that Moscow will respond to the United States' continued deployment of weapons banned under the previous missile treaty between the two countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
During an annual meeting held by the International Special Advisory Council of the Center for the Study of Non-Proliferation, Antonov said in a video speech, according to what Russia Today reported: “The US deployment of medium and short-range missiles in Europe will have more serious repercussions than the deployment of American missiles in Asia and the Pacific. Pointing out that it is premature to say that the two countries are close to reaching agreements on limiting arms.
Antonov called on the United States to abandon attempts to "extract its advantages" in the final stage of the entry into force of the "START 3" treaty on limiting strategic offensive weapons, and said, "We call on Washington to show political wisdom and assume its responsibility to maintain strategic stability."
And Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed earlier today that the US withdrawal from the Treaty Banning Medium and Short Range Missiles is a fatal mistake that would escalate and increase the possibility of confrontation.
