Referendum in Chile: "It's a violent shock for the right"

INTERVIEW - The massive “yes” weakens the ruling coalition, explains Stéphanie Alenda, professor of political sociology.

- Did the result of this referendum surprise you?

Stéphanie ALENDA.

Yes, by the magnitude of the victory of the "yes".

The most optimistic surveys gave 80% yes.

And we were very close to this result.

Sunday was a great celebration of democracy.

It is a violent shock, a huge defeat, for the right, which expected to obtain a third of the votes.

The ruling coalition is weakened, because there were personalities in favor of the change of Constitution, including the former president of National Renovation.

Now the right must heal its wounds.

According to polls published Monday morning, 32% of people claiming to be right-wing would have voted yes.
