The truck driver who ran over nine-year-old David Ohayon from Ashkelon to death was questioned tonight (Monday) on suspicion of manslaughter and abandonment.
Ohayon was hit by the truck while riding his bike, and his death was determined on the spot.
The offending driver, a city resident in his 60s, fled the scene and was stopped when he returned to the scene of the incident after 40 minutes.
Yossi Saadoun, the brother of the offending driver, claimed his innocence.
"As I understood it, the child got in the rear wheels of the stroller. It is no longer under the control of the driver, especially that it is after a turn that you see nothing," he said.
"I believe my brother is not guilty of anything. It does not make sense for a small child to cross the road at all in a place like this."
Saadoun even denied the claim that his brother fled the scene of the accident.
"From what I understand, my brother did not see him, if he had known he would have stayed at the place," he noted.
He said, "He went to unload and came back on the same axis. A person who wants to escape does not come back on the same axis."
The driver will be brought in tomorrow for a hearing on extending his detention.
