The Association of Muslim Scholars in Lebanon condemned the recent stances and statements that were offensive to religious beliefs and symbols that were made by French President Emmanuel Macron under the pretext of freedom of opinion and belief and freedom of the press.
In today's statement, the gathering rejected the official French position of insulting religions and heavenly beliefs under the pretext of freedom of opinion and expression, and said that Macron attacks Islam instead of attacking terrorism and extremism sponsored by his country in cooperation with the United States, stressing that all false claims of freedom of opinion and expression cannot justify the objection rejected. For the shrine of the Messenger of God "PBUH" and insulting the divine religions and beliefs.
The statement called on the French parliament to pass a law prohibiting insulting religions and exposure to sacred things and imposing penalties for that.
French President Emmanuel Macron had defended the "Charlie Hebdo" newspaper reprinting offensive cartoons of the Holy Prophet Muhammad "PBUH", claiming that this matter came within the framework of freedom of expression.
