Pope Francis announced today (Sunday) the appointment of 13 new cardinals, including the Archbishop of Washington - who will be the first black American cardinal in the Catholic Church.
The pope surprisingly announced his election during the Mass he held from his window overlooking St. Peter's Square in the Vatican.
The coronation ceremony of the cardinals - who are the highest religious authority in the Catholic Church under the Pope - will take place on November 28.
Wilton Daniel Gregory, the 72-year-old archbishop of Washington, will, among other things, get to choose the next pope.
Four of the 13 future cardinals are over 80 years old, so they will not be allowed to vote according to church rules.
Along with Gregory, the nine cardinals who will have an impact on the identity of the next Catholic Church leader come from eight different countries - the United States, Italy, Malta, Rwanda, the Philippines, Chile, Brunei and Mexico.
Experts say choosing them tightens Francis' influence over a group of clerics who will one day choose his successor.
If indeed the cardinals were appointed as expected, about 60% of the senior clergy in the Catholic Church were appointed in the days of Francis, who was apparently trying to ensure that his heirs would continue in his inclusive policy.
Just last week his interview was published in a documentary in which the pope expressed support for same-sex civil marriage, while the official position of the Catholic Church considers homosexual relations a sin.

Gregory, who became a pastor at age 25, was appointed to his current position in May last year.
He replaced Donald Worrell, who resigned due to a rendering of sexual exploitation within the church.
Gregory led efforts to uproot the phenomenon, and as president of the United States Bishops' Conference, he urged Catholic Church leaders to adopt tougher punitive measures against sex offenders in 2002.
In addition, he attacked US President Donald Trump for his remarks and visits to religious sites, especially after arriving at the Church of John Paul II in Washington while security forces violently evacuated anti-racist protesters for a photo-op with a Bible book. Gregory called the visit "disgraceful" And
more prominent appointments of the pope are those of clerics from Rwanda and Brunei, as part of the pope's policy of raising the status of churches in remote places where Catholics are a small minority.
