Category 1 hurricane Zeta made landfall late Monday in the Yucatan peninsula, Mexico, becoming the second cyclone of its type to directly hit this popular tourist area after the Delta.
The point on the coast reached by Zeta is located in the municipality of Tulum, about 80 miles (130 kilometers) from Cancun, and about 60 (97 kilometers) from Puerto Morelos, where it made landfall on its Delta side on October 7. .
In that case, it was a Category 2 hurricane.
Zeta had already begun this Monday to hit the resorts of Playa del Carmen and Cozumel with heavy rains and winds, as it moved through the Caribbean towards Yucatan.
It has maximum sustained winds of 80 miles (more than 128 km) per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).
It is expected that it can then continue its march to the US coast of the Gulf of Mexico, where it could arrive by midweek.
The NHC warned that dangerous hurricane conditions and possible storm surges are expected in parts of the Yucatan Peninsula in the early hours of this Tuesday, as well as heavy rains throughout that area, in the Cayman Islands and in western Cuba along the throughout the day.
