The Christmas market in Garching is canceled this year.

However, the street festival is being planned and will be expanded because there is no longer enough space for the stalls on the Bürgerplatz.

Garching

- The cancellation of the Christkindlmarkt has yet to be confirmed by the city council, but the main committee quickly agreed that the Christmas entertainment will be canceled this year.

Admissions from the stand operators were very sparse, said cultural advisor Thomas Gotterbarm.

The steam in the mulled wine hut would “distribute the aerosols wonderfully in the air”, according to Gerlinde Schmolke (SPD).

"If we get into the headlines that we have generated a source of infection here, then that is in no relation," said Daniela Rehens (Greens).

Idea to expand the street festival on Schleißheimer Straße or Maypole Square

Things look much more promising at the street festival, "the annual highlight that everyone in Garching is looking forward to," emphasized Gotterbarm.

Due to the redesign of the streets, for example with new bike racks or seating, the street festival in July has to expand to surrounding areas.

“Otherwise we cannot accept many commercial providers or stands with Garching associations”, emphasized the cultural advisor.

In order to compensate for the area on Bürgerplatz that has been reduced by 30 percent, one has to switch to Schleißheimer Strasse or Maypole Square.

The latter did not meet with approval from the councils, as Münchner Strasse had to be closed to rule out the risk of accidents when crossing visitors.

Only Norbert Fröhler (BfG) pleaded for the maypole place and would like to have the option of a road closure checked by the Freising State Building Authority.

“If so, then only Schleißheimer Strasse,” argued Jürgen Ascherl (CSU).

"This is where the festival originated," added Florian Baierl (UG).

Involve more clubs again

In principle, they want to make the festival more attractive again for clubs, but commercials have increased significantly in recent years, according to Hans-Peter Adolf (Greens).

Salvatore Disanto (CSU) would like to see more and more the tradespeople based in Schleißheimer Strasse involved.

“Above all, it is important that no booths are placed in front of the entrance door.” Despite “expansion”, the street festival should remain compact with short distances.
