The Hong Kong Baptist University's scientific research team has developed a new MRI scanning imaging agent that can display and detect the size and quantity of the main marker of Alzheimer's disease "β-amyloid" accumulated in the brain.

Professor Huang Wencheng of the Department of Chemistry at HKBU said that this discovery brings hope to the diagnosis and evaluation of the efficacy of Alzheimer's disease.

The HKBU team used nanoparticles containing metal "gamma", the surface of which is specially designed to have a silicon coating with fluorescent anthocyanin dyes, which can be used to display the image and quantity of "beta-amyloid".

Professor Huang Wencheng of the Department of Chemistry of HKBU said that the team conducted experiments in mice and found that the modified nanoparticles can bind to "beta-amyloid" to enhance magnetic resonance signals, and their high sensitivity can effectively help diagnose Alzheimer’s disease. "The image is so detailed that you can see it."

Huang Wencheng said that Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia, and there is currently no cure, and its cause is unknown.

The characteristic of Alzheimer's disease is the accumulation of "amyloid" in the brain, also known as "age spots".

Common diagnostic methods for this condition include clinical assessment, cognitive testing, and neurological effects, but they need to be effective after symptoms appear.
