Hurricane Zeta will make landfall in the Mexican Caribbean 2:49
(CNN) -
Hurricane Zeta made landfall Monday night on the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, north of Tulum, with sustained winds of 130 kilometers per hour, making it a category 1 hurricane.
Conditions will deteriorate in the coming hours with life-threatening hurricane conditions and storm surge conditions.
Zeta is expected to produce a storm surge 5 to 10 centimeters above normal tides, spanning the hurricane warning area from Punta Allen to Progreso Mexico, including the island of Cozumel.
10-20 centimeter rainfall is likely with higher localized amounts, which could also lead to dangerous flash floods.
Zeta will lose energy when crossing the Yucatan;
however, the National Hurricane Center forecast indicates that it will remain at Category 1 intensity as it moves toward the Gulf Coast.
It is estimated to make landfall Wednesday night near the Mississippi River Delta and Mobile, Alabama.
