The leader of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, 'Abd al-Fatah al-Burhan, defended the normalization agreement with Israel yesterday (Monday).

He said the agreement had not yet been finalized and that he would be able to help Sudan, which is in the midst of a severe economic crisis.

In his first statement since the announcement of the US-mediated agreement, he said he had consulted with the prime minister and most of the political forces before the announcement on Friday.

This was done during a joint conversation with US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Al-Burhan met with Netanyahu in Uganda earlier this year earlier this year.

The move is controversial in Sudan, which was once a sworn enemy of Israel.

Some political factions vehemently oppose normalization.

"I always prefer to call it reconciliation rather than normalization," Burhan said in a television interview.

"So far, there is no agreement. We will sign with the other two sides, America and Israel, on aspects of cooperation."

Burhan heads the sovereign council, made up of military personnel and civilians, which came to power after the overthrow of dictator Omar al-Bashir last year.

The government, made up of professionals, is struggling with an economic crisis that includes rising inflation, a weak currency and a shortage of essential commodities.

Last week, Sudan received a certain sigh of relief when the United States announced its removal from the list of countries that support terrorism, which prevented it from international aid and debt relief.
