The Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection of the Government of Mexico Alfonso Durazo will officially present his resignation from the position this Friday, two officials from the agency informed CNN.
This Tuesday, the Political Coordination Board of the Senate of Mexico reported that Durazo's appearance, scheduled for this Wednesday, is postponed due to the official's next departure.
Alfonso Durazo announced his resignation to run for the Governor of Sonora in the morning conference of President López Obrador last Wednesday, in which he defended his work at the head of the institution and the results in terms of containing violence
"I tell you that I am resigning from the cabinet, but not from the political project that the President of the Republic has historically led," he said on Wednesday.
Regarding security, he stated that there was a "downward trend" in the number of crimes.
However, regarding the increase in intentional homicide, he pointed out that “it did not happen overnight”, but rather that it was “a process of social decomposition”.
Durazo mentioned pending tasks such as strengthening the police forces and finishing the creation of the National Guard.
López Obrador highlighted the work of the official, whom he described as "professional, extraordinary public servant, upright, hard-working and honest people."
